    Market directionThe direction of the price movement of a financial instrument is called the market direction.

    If the market direction is up, it is an uptrend. If the market direction is down, it is a downtrend.

    If the market direction is neither in an uptrend nor a downtrend, traders speak of a ranging market. If the volatility of a ranging market is rather low, it can be called a flat market.
